Jason X
Jason X (2001)
Jason in Space! With half the cast of Andromeda. And a team of Marines trying to take him out in the middle of a Holodeck. Plus, upgrades, robots, and wooden teens! It’s like someone wrote this movie for me. Honestly, if I could only watch ten movies ever again, this one might be on the list.
I’ve written and said plenty about Jason X in the past on various long lost YouTube channels and blogs, but this is the first time i’ve written about it in the context of a sci-fi horror, rather than purely a horror. And there’s a lot of cool sci-fi stuff in this insanely dumb (but awesome) slasher flick.
The plot is simple, despite the absurd concept. Jason Voorhees is accidentally frozen in the past when he’s ‘killed’ by Lexa Doig’s Rowan (who’s also frozen) Then, they’re both revived 455 years later where he sets about killing a bunch of air head teen scientists and marines aboard a starship, while she once again has to try and stop the unkillable killing machine… and it’s amazing.
There’s not enough sci-fi slashers out there. In space, Jason has a whole bunch of new tools to kill stupid teens with including: liquid nitrogen, space machetes, and well, that’s about it really as he’s more of an old fashion kinda slasher and just wants his own machete back.
The teens are all idiotic cannon fodder who deserve to die, and as with most slashers, the fun is watching how they get diced up. I love the whole marines trying to take a killer down scenes as well in any movie, and this was no exception. Was also fun seeing the ship battering ram through a space station as well, that’s not something you see everyday, especially in a Friday the 13th movie.
The world building was cool as we learn that Earth is dead, greed is still a big deal, nano technology and robots exist, and the human race lives on a planet very originally named Earth 2. Also, we created holodecks, but missed the boat on transporter beams. Win some lose some.
Lexa Doig was great, but I absolutely loved her in the first two seasons of Andromeda (before the show turned awful) so I was always going to think that, especially when I originally sat in the cinema on opening night for a midnight showing. (I can’t explain how excited I was for this movie) Lisa Ryder of Andromeda fame also gives it a go, but it’s not an easy task being a robot in a Jason flick.
I could write a book about this movie, and always dreamt of writing the sequel (apparently Pat Cardigan beat me too it with an impossible to find book that I desperately want to read after her brilliant Alien 3 book) My love for Jason X far outweighs the terrible CGI, wooden acting, and nonsense story. It’s a perfect movie in my eyes, despite knowing it’s far from it. I won’t say whether I recommend this one or not as I know i’m one-hundred bias and blinded by my love of the film, but hopefully plenty of people out there can enjoy it. If not, who cares, I still get to watch it loads.
